These stages themselves are sidescrolling action levels that move from left to right, with various enemies attacking your kaiju. If one of your monsters died, it will be restored on the next world, but if your final monster on the board dies, even if the other had already advanced, it means game over. Once the headquarters level is completed, the monster that completed it will be allowed to move on to the next stage. At the end of the board there will be a unique ' Headquarters' level, often protected by the last and strongest of the board's enemy kaiju. Monsters cannot move through 'gaps' on the board or other monsters. These are halved in the Japanese version, but you could move an extra space if you land on a Subspace tile. Godzilla can move two spaces, and Mothra can move 4. Once the monster has finished moving, all the stages passed over have to be played. Both monsters act as pieces on this board to be moved though the stages, represented as tiles. The game starts on a board- the 'Ring Field' described by the story. G:MoM has two playable characters- Godzilla and Mothra. For the sake of the future of the Earth, Godzilla's fierce battle now begins." Godzilla advances through battle stages called Ring Fields provided in interplanetary space to battle that legion of space monsters controlled by Planet X. The Earth sends Godzilla and Mothra, to defend itself. The invaders from Planet X attack the Earth as part of their plan to conquer the entire universe using a legion of space monsters. when the orbits of Pluto and Neptune exchange their positions, the Earth receives a declaration of war from an unknown planet.
